Something I've just had to start doing at last, so maybe this will come in handy for someone else.

First off, look out the V5 & MOT certificate for each car involved in the transfer - ie for the donor car (with the plate your moving) and the receiving car (where the plate will end up)

Scoot along to those lovely* people at the DVLA and get yourself a V317 Transferring a Vehicle registration Number form. Get a black pen, write in need BLOCK CAPITALS and complete vin/chasis number, registered keepers names etc.

Take the above, with 80 squid, to the cheery people at the DVLA and watch local beaurocracy kick in. Give it a week or three, and you should be able to apply your plates to your new automobile.

Easy as pie ;)

Prob be the same process to get the private plate put on your car, change of registration mark form i would imagine, would have to also get the tax disk changed to match the original plate details.

Just with regards to going back to a standard plate, it seems it may not be as easy as getting the forms changed and putting the old plates back, i got told i may not have the the original registration restored to the Punto, luckily i did!

My old punto was re-assigned its old plate. Now just gotta wait for the V5 and my certificate of entitlement to come through.

Any idea if the time scales are the same for dealers doing the transfer?
I ask as my private plate thats on my Civic is to be transferred to my new 500 (dealer is doing it) and my car is due anytime now (could be there) at the dealership and I dont want any further delays. I asked my useless salesman and he had no bloody clue what he was talking about (I think he had forgotten about this little detail) and then said he would speak to the admin girls to find out whats required. If this delays me taking delivery (will not collect until its all done) I will kick him up and down Balfield Road...

I'd imagine you'll get the car with its original plate.

Assuming your then trading in the civic? then the dealer will probably begin the process when the changeover occurs? It's not something I've done through a dealer, but I cant see why it would stop you getting the car on any agreed date. You might not have the plate on it though!

I am not sure Martyn hence my questions.
If the above happens then its not too bad but he knew about this from day one (perhaps I should have put it on retention myself) but he's a useless clown and I have no confidence in his ability to get this right. Only problem I can see with what you've said is this, they wont be able to sell my car until the reg transfer comes through (their problem certainly) but I dont want to risk them punting it with the private plate on it and me loosing it.

You wont loose it.

I believe that taking the plate back off the car (ie if you put it on retention yourself) is a much speedier process as the car has its original reg. It's putting the plate on that took time, as far as I can remember?

Will pay him a visit on Monday and see if he has managed to find out whats required. Had a quick squint on DVLA site and it looks like dealers can do somethings that us mear mortals can't in respect to transferring plates so will hope this is the case.
Cheers for the advice though.

hi, if plates on retention it cost you nothing [put private plate on there and now,and you get new tax with plate reg on it] on a form you hand in cant mind number of form, but theres a tick box to keep that registration of plate takin off [so it dos,nt muck up cars service history],TICK THE BOX,

dads done a few,but that was start of this year might have changed now.

UPDATE......

now you need to tell them you want to keep old reg on dvla database.
