A large crowd flocked to Brands Hatch at the weekend – and it was nothing to do with recent celebrity Fiat endorsements, or a strange Elle MacPherson and James Morrison duet that some marketing guru had no doubt dreamt up. This time it was all in the name of racing.
Spectators enjoyed a great day out at a sun soaked Brands hatch, as the Abarth 500 European series hit the UK.
The sight of several 500 Abarths in one place is rare enough, but to see several of them in fierce wheel to wheel combat, no doubt thrilled the fans. With the one make series ensuring close racing, and the 500 Abarth managing an impressive average lap speed of 80 MPH, there were more than enough thrills and spills to keep everyone thoroughly entertained.
Home advantage paid off in the end, as Britain’s Adam Jones took 2 wins from 2.
The 500’s weren’t the only little Italian flying machines competing in the UK, as 2 Fiat Grande Punto Abarths were also in action, this time, featuring in the BARC Hillclimb Championship at Gurston Down, near Salisbury.
This was part of the Abarth media motorsport programme, which allowed 4 journalists the chance to compete in the event.
Let’s hope they didn’t damage the cars in typical journalistic fashion!
